Reflections on 50 years of Financial Planning Advice

By Freedman Financial

This month Freedman Financial will celebrate 50 years of providing financial planning and investment advice to individuals and families.

Back in 1968, planning for your financial future was a relatively foreign idea, yet the “vision” of retirement very clear. On the last day of work, your company would throw retirement party. A gold watch would be fitted to your wrist and you’d head out on a Love Boat-esque cruise with your spouse.

Retirement meant life on a fixed income that included a Social Security check, a pension check and perhaps some income from your bank account. Interest rates were a lot higher back then.

During your working years, travel was in a station wagon – perhaps with a trailer attached. You mowed your own lawn and sent the kids out to play – without a cell phone.

As a family you had snowball fights, you listened to the Sox on a transistor radio, drank from the garden hose, stepped in dog poop, and ate whatever mom put on our plate – or else.

Life was simpler

Now 50 years later, it’s more complicated. We earn more, spend more, want more and do more. We feel pressure to keep up with the Joneses, support our children & aging parents and we regularly deal with our health and longevity.

Every day we’re challenged by social media posts, the fear of being politically incorrect and the burden of having to craft a life in retirement with little assistance. Today’s world is far more daunting, intense and challenging.

In retirement it’s now up to you to plan for life without a paycheck. For most, pensions are a thing of the past. Sure, you were taught the importance of saving for the future, but you soon realize that the future is now the present – and no one ever taught you how to spend what you’ve accumulated.

At Freedman Financial we understand your struggle. That’s because providing financial planning and investment advice isn’t new to us. For 50 years we’ve delivered advice to individuals and families based on understanding your collective financial needs before offering an investment or insurance solution. We’ve always placed your interests first. This isn’t just some fancy slogan.

We’ve always been willing to put our advice in writing and we’ve continued to plot your financial progress with an eye on achieving your goals.

Through the years, we’ve expanded our communications and now take great pride in delivering 72 points of contact to our clients each year.

Today’s world of financial planning and investment advice is far more interactive. You can view a dashboard of your financial life at the click of a button. Conversations surrounding refinancing a home, purchasing a vehicle, buying a second property, helping the kids with their expenses and exploring trusts are equally as important as developing an investment strategy that aligns with your personal goals & objectives.

Our commitment to delivering financial advice in a language you can understand™ has never been more vital.

What’s Next…

As thousands of baby boomers turn 65 every day, the prospect of retirement will enter the daily thinking of more Americans. Yet the ability to turn the mental switch from saving for the future to spending in retirement may be your greatest emotional hurdle. We’ll be here to help just as we’ve been there for so many generations of families.

Enjoying your final 30 to 40 years of life is far different from what made life exciting in the earlier years. At Freedman Financial teaching you how to spend money without fear of running out and living your life to its fullest is priority number one. We know that your parent’s ‘fixed’ approach to retirement, while rooted in their life-long lessons, is no longer feasible. We need to deliver flexible strategies that give you the opportunity to meet your expenses for today and manage through life’s everyday roller coaster.

With our 50 years of experience, we can truly say that we’ve “Been there…done that…”

There’s no crystal ball on longevity. But it’s likely you’ll live longer than you ever imagined. It’s time to make smart financial decisions in retirement so you can celebrate what you’ve accomplished.

We live in world of changing tax laws, blended families, economic changes and “ambulance chasers.” Your family should have a trusted partner to guide them. You should never feel vulnerable or alone. And when that final day does come, we’ll be there to provide stewardship and advice to you survivors.

A relationship with Freedman Financial has always been open and honest. You can ask us anything about money and we’ll do our best to give you advice that makes sense for you – not what professor Google or your friends and family suggest.

We’ve seen too many families reach that time when it’s too difficult to manage their personal financial life on their own. Doing it yourself or relying on too many investment and/or insurance people is just too cumbersome. You’re handcuffed from being able to do what you really want. The decision to get your financial house in order happens when YOU believe the time is right. And when that time comes, we’ll be here for you. We’ll listen intently, offer our wisdom and experience and place your interests first…always.

It’s what we’ve done for 50 years and look forward to delivering you financial advice in a language you can understand™ for many decades to come.
